Ferric nitrate, also known as iron (III) nitrate or iron trinitrate, is a versatile chemical compound widely used in various industrial and municipal applications. It is primarily used in the treatment of sulfides in wastewater and sludge and plays a key role in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater treatment plants. As an oxidant, it is effective for odor abatement, helping to prevent the production of hydrogen sulfide by bacteria during anaerobic respiration.

Ferric nitrate is also utilized in analytical chemistry, electronics, tanning and dyeing, as an etchant, in catalyst production, and in exhaust gas purifying catalysts. Typical applications include odor and septicity control in wastewater systems, pipelines, and pumping stations, as well as use as a catalyst and dye mordant.
